      9:30am class: Patriotism Topics

      • Define and discuss cultural goals that should be used to determine the content of an American history or literature course (you pick) at your school

      • To which of the two approaches to American culture -- pluralist or particularist-- do you adhere?  Why?

      11am class - Education Topics

      • What is the purpose of education?  Is it to train for a career, to give job skills?  Take your stance with Bird to argue that a college education should enhance chances for a good job.  OR take a stance against Bird to argue that job skills are not education's main goal.

For either position, find current equivalents of statistics Bird cites, such as cost of tuition, student expenses, and projected salaries for various professors

      • Suggest alternative methods of education besides college.  Extend essay by focusing on one alternative and give details, examples, hypothetical or real cases.
