Essay 3 Assignment

Write a 1200 – 1500 word persuasive essay to include a minimum of one (1) reference from the text used in the “Global Community” unit, three to five (3-5) references from outside sources and a corresponding Works Cited page.  Topics are related to these readings from Writing on the River and the online textbook supplement.

Choose one of the following:

·         Throughout history groups within different nations have tried to “civilize” people in societies that they deemed more “native” or less developed than their own. This practice has taken many forms and still takes place today. Choose a particular instance of this type of practice in history. Was it warranted? Helpful? Harmful? Write a persuasive essay based on your opinion regarding the particular historical incident you choose. Make sure that your focus is narrow and specific.

·         As the “natives” were called by the narrator in George Orwell’s “Marrakech,” what members of our society today are “invisible”? Explain. What are the reasons? What are the consequences? Write a persuasive essay regarding your opinions on the specific topic you choose. Make sure that your focus is narrow and specific.

·         Do you consider yourself a “citizen of the world”? Explain what this means to you and support its merit or its faults. Make sure that your focus is narrow and specific.

·         There are many issues that arise from the power of the “news” in the US, for instance: the ability to get it instantly at any time within the U.S., the ability of practically anyone in the world to get it instantly, the choices made on what the “news” will be, and much more. Choose a particular, focused issue concerning the news, today, and write a persuasive essay based on your opinion.
