Essay 4 Instructions
Deadline for submitting Essay 4 is Saturday, December 1, 2012.
Select one of the following for a 1200-1500 word essay to include a minimum of one reference from texts used in this unit and three to five outside sources (from books, database articles, or reputable web sites) and a corresponding Works Cited page. Do not forget that you can use sources that you used in previous essays if they apply to this essay as well. Library databases should include Credo Refence, Films on Demand, MasterFILE Premier, or EBSCO ebook collection. Websites for Google Books may be useful.
- The questions which follow the Hurston essay in your textbook point out that Hurston had a very different idea about the role of the black intellectual in society than Langston Hughes, another important African-American writer of her time period. Investigate the history of their public debate and explain how the issues that divided them are or are not relevant to modern racial discussions. In addition to Hurston and Hughes, your essay should include voices from current commentators on racial issues.
- According to Shaheen's essay, the American media helps perpetuate negative Arab stereotypes. Is this still true? Using examples from modern media, explain why Shaheen's argument is or is not still relevant. Additionally, research organizations that work to promote awareness of Arab culture in America and explain what they are or are not doing to address concerns of those like Shaheen.
- Select one specific immigrant subculture in America and investigate how that culture maintains its own identity while becoming distinctly American. Look at things like religious traditions and ceremonies, art, music, and literature, and any cultural traditions that have been passed down but redefined as they were transported and translated to America.
Your essay should follow all of the guidelines for MLA formatting and all of the guidelines for previous assignments in this course.
