English 1010 students will be able to use effective research strategies to locate a quality sources in order to support their paper.

First Formal Writing Assignment Comp 1


Write a 500 – 750 word (roughly 2 ½ to 3 pages) persuasive essay on whether or not you believe there is a unique American culture? Why or why not?

  1. Support your points with facts, logic, and quotes. Be sufficiently detailed.
  2. The essay should be thesis-driven and the thesis should be clearly stated.
  3. Your essay should use two sources: one primary, the other secondary. Include at least one quote from each source in your essay.
  4. You should cite your sources correctly and develop a “Works Cited” page using proper MLA format.
  5. The essay should be typed, double-spaced, with your name, the course name and date in the upper left hand corner. You should use 12 point font.
  6. Assessment will be based upon the strength of your thesis, relevant support, continuity/flow, diction, and proper syntax.

A draft of the essay is due on Tuesday, June 24th. You must bring 2 copies of your essay to class that day.

The final version of the essay is due on Thursday, June 26th. Upon completion, submit your essay in the appropriate e-learn drop box.
