Assignment Description

For essays 3 and 4, students will research their choice of topics, which may be chosen from the following:
Essay 3
1. Choose and research a stereotype you see in our culture. What does this stereotype reveal about culture that it exists in our society?
Special note: If you choose topic 1 you are not allowed to choose the stereotype of the welfare mother, “gangbangers,” “deadbeat dads,” “rednecks,” or “rap guys.” Also, you may not choose a stereotype of a group that you may be considered part of; for example, I am a young white teacher and would not be allowed to research any “teacher” or “young white women” stereotypes since I belong to these particular groups. Instead you must stretch your knowledge of stereotypes.
2. Choose a cultural-based topic that you find applies to what we have been discussing in class and run it by me before the first peer review. I have final veto power if I don’t think you can easily support your idea with textual evidence.
3. This country has been called a “nation of immigrants” and the “great melting pot” of cultures. We pride ourselves on being a “diverse” country. What is the real definition of diversity in the twenty-first century?
Essay 3 will require a minimum of 2 sources from the library's databases or credible Internet sources and 2 references from the 1010 textbook.
This paper will be 750-1000 words.
Essay 4
1. Choose a work or workplace topic that you find applies to what we have been discussing in class and run it by me before the first peer review. I have final veto power if I don’t think you can easily support your idea with textual evidence. 2. Is the American middle class a cultural myth? Why or why not?
Essay 4 will require 3-5 sources from the databases or credible Internet sites and 1 reference from the textbook.
This paper will be 1200-1250 words.
