In a quotable essay* in College English, critic Dan Vogel writes:

"We know that not all journeys have precisely the same symbolic intentions: some are carefully planned journeys; in others the hero does not even know he is on a journey; sometimes the reader does not know it either....I suggest a lexicon of six terms, each descriptive of a type of movement in a narrative: journey, wandering, quest, pilgrimage, odyssey, and going-forth."

Topics (choose 1):
1.      How is a journey theme revealed in one of Reed’s poems and one of the other literary pieces we have read (i.e. Mason, Bambara, Dickinson, Tennyson)?
2.      How does symbolism reveal the theme in one of Reed’s poems and either Tennyson or Dickinson?
3.      How does the title reveal the theme in Reed’s “Jacket Notes” and either Bambara or Mason?
4.      You may propose a comparative topic to me, but it must include one of the Reed poems as a primary source. This topic must be discussed and approved before the first peer review activity.

Length: no more than 750 words not including the Works Cited page citations and your MLA headers

Sources: Two primary sources (literary pieces) and at least two secondary sources
The secondary sources should come from the library databases or a C.R.A.A.P.-tested Internet source.

Essay 4 Topic:
For this essay take two pieces we have read this semester and discuss how two literary elements of your choosing reveal the theme. For example, take Donne and Marvell from the Essay 2 sections and discuss how the use of symbolism and word choice reveal the theme of love.
Use any literary piece that is mentioned on the course schedule.

Length: no more than 750 words not including the Works Cited page citations and your MLA headers

Sources: Two primary sources (the literary pieces) with at least two secondary sources (from the library databases)
The secondary sources should come from the library databases or a C.R.A.A.P.-tested Internet source.
