Assignment Description

  

  UNIT THREE – America

Choose one type of text from Unit Three that you have not written on yet – Poetry: Hughes, Ginsberg, or Alexie. Short Fiction: Jackson or O’Brien. Film: American Beauty.

Then, choose ONE lens that you have not used yet to look at that text through: Formalist, Deconstructionist, Gender, Sexuality, Psychological, Sociological, Archetypal, Historical, Biographical, or Cultural.

·         You are only writing on ONE text with the use of ONE lens.

 

·         Be sure your essay has a clear thesis that uses your lens to make an argument about specific elements of your text – such theme, symbol, character, setting, style, or other literary elements. 

 

·         Your essay should include direct quotes and examples from your primary text, AS WELL AS a minimum of TWO additional, RELIABLE, outside sourceS. Everything should be in proper MLA format with in-text citations and a works cited.

 

·         Please focus on ANALYSIS. Stay away from summary of your text.

 

·         This essay is 800 words minimum – and that does not include heading, title, and works cited.

 

Tisa's thesis:

Eudora Welty's short story, "A Worn Path," illustrates the use of the archetype lens in its journey theme and in the character portrayed by Phoenix Jackson.
